Established 1998

The Lightning Athletic Program is a member of the Florida High School Athletic Association and the Greater Miami Athletic Conference. Lightning Athletics offers students the opportunity to compete in 15 different sports with a total of 31 teams competing at the Varsity and Junior Varsity level. We currently field 15 girls teams and 16 boys teams, each with 13 at the varsity level, servicing approximately 400 student-athletes per year.

Lightning Athletics has established a history of success, winning 9 State Championships and a multitude of district and GMAC Championships. Additionally, individual student-athletes have collected accolades such as Miami-Dade Athlete of the Year, Player of the Year in their respective sport, and All-American honors. Most recently we were honored with NHSACA National Coach of the Year in the sport of Tennis (2015), the Miami-Dade Coach of the Year (Boys Tennis, 2015) and two Co-Player of the Year awards in our tennis program (2013). Alex Knight collected All-American honors as well as being crowned as the overall State Champion in 2013, while Mohamad Alsabbaghe received NISCA All-American honors for Water Polo in 2015. In 2014-2015, 19 of our teams qualified for and competed in the district tournament with 6 of those teams winning the tournament and advancing to regional competition.

FHSAA  Academic All-State Team

Congratulations go out to Deborah Vainstein for being named to the 2016 FHSAA Academic All-State Team!

Members of the Academic All-State Team exemplify the true meaning of the term student-athlete by excelling academically, performing athletically, and investing into the community.

Overall, 24 student-athletes were chosen from across the state: 12 boys and 12 girls. The group will be awarded a total of $40,000 in scholarships.

To be nominated for this esteemed honor, a student must be a graduating senior who earned a varsity
letter in at least two FHSAA-recognized sports during his or her junior and senior years while maintaining an unweighted GPA of at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. This year, 165 students were in the applicant pool. Nominees were critiqued on their academic record, athletic participation, non-athletic activities, community service and essay.

Each Academic All-State Team member will be honored at a celebratory banquet on June 13 in Gainesville, where they will be presented with a $1,350 scholarship. Out of the 24 scholarship recipients, one male and one female student-athlete will be deemed “Scholar-Athlete of the Year,” the FHSAA’s most prestigious honor. The winners of this award will both receive an additional $3,800 in scholarships and a trophy.
